Holiday Movie Magic: 7 Mansions You Can Purchase From Your Favorite Yuletide Films

Holiday Movie Magic: 7 Mansions You Can Purchase From Your Favorite Yuletide Films

December 13, 2018 by Jennifer Davida

The holidays truly are the most wonderful time of the year. The holiday season brings up memories of ribbons and bows; of department stores and homes trimmed in garland; of hot cocoa with marshmallows, and most importantly of spending time with our loved ones.

One of the most popular holiday activities is to curl up with a Holiday film. Most people, were you to ask them, would be able to rattle off a holiday favorite – a film that they watch year in and year out to celebrate the season. Many of these films feature cherished holiday homes.

After much research, and thanks to Zillow, we’ve made our list and checked it twice and we are happy to share with you a list of holiday movie mansions that you can live in…for the right price of course.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

A beloved holiday classic that has been enjoyed by families worldwide for over 50 years, “A Miracle on 34th Street” tells the story of 6-year-old Susan and Kris Kringle and his legal battle to prove that he is, in fact, Santa Claus. Though much of the film takes place at Macy’s flagship store on 34th street in New York City, New York, there is one scene where Susan sees her dream house, that she asked Santa for, for the very first time.

The house used in the film is located in Port Washington, New York. The home, built in 1934, is comprised of 1,703 sqft. and looks very much the same today as it did 84 years ago.

Zillow estimates Susan’s Dream Home to be worth approximately $918,812 today.

Home Alone (1990)

No Christmas Movie Mansion list would be complete without a mention of the infamous McAllister Mansion.

For those unfamiliar with the film, “Home Alone” follows young Kevin McAllister (Macaulay Culkin), accidentally left home alone during the family trip to France as he defends his house from the burglars known as the “Wet Bandits” (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.)

Build in 1920, the McAllister mansion is located in Winnetka, Illinois. The 5 bed/4 bath home boats 4,243 sqft. and includes a finished basement, attic and fireplace.

Valued at an estimated $1,962,708, the Zillow listing maintains that the home offers, “tremendous flow, warmth and character,” and is booby-trap free!

The Holiday (2006)

Much like Iris (Kate Winslet), we are swooning over this San Marino, CA estate.

“The Holiday” follows Englishwoman Iris and Hollywood hot-shot Amanda (Cameron Diaz) as they switch homes for the holiday season. While Amanda lands in Iris’s quaint English cottage, Iris gets to spend her time in Amanda’s stunning California mansion.

The 2-story, 7 bed/7 bath home was built in 1928 by Wallace Neff as his personal estate. At 10,324 sqft. boasts a variety of features including an inner courtyard and private garden, walk-in bar, library with a corner fireplace and carved wood ceilings, a media/game room, pool and spa, several fountain courtyards, paddle tennis court, rose garden, and a guest area with a separate staircase.

If you are as in love with this estate as we are, you’ll be thrilled to know that it is currently on the market and can be yours for $10,780,000.

Elf (2003)

Will Ferrell’s “Elf” tells the story of a human named Buddy who was adopted by Elves in the North Pole. As an adult, Buddy learns his biological father is on the naughty list and sets out to find his dad and teach him the true meaning of Christmas.

Movie buffs will recognize the building Buddy’s father lives in from another Hollywood blockbuster, “Ghostbusters.”

Nicknamed the “Ghostbusters Building” and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 55 Central Park West was built in 1929 and was transformed into a rental building in the ’30s. Most of the condos available are listed in the $1-3 million range.

55 Central Park West also boasts quite possibly New York’s most coveted Duplex Penthouse. Spanning the 19th and 20th floors, the Upper West Side penthouse has been home to a number of colorful celebrities throughout the decades.

Owned by composer Jerry Herman in the 1970s, the home was eventually sold to fashion designer Calvin Klein for $1 million. Klein sold the penthouse but loved the property so much that he bought it again in the ’90s. It was later sold to David Geffen for $6 million, who sold to the music executive, Steve Gottlieb for around $8.6 million. Gottlieb sold the penthouse to Marc Lasry, the co-founder and CEO of the Avenue Capital Group, for $33 million in 2014.

The two-story penthouse spans approximately 5000 sqft. with 300 linear feet of unparalleled central park views. Notable features include a living room with a fireplace, formal dining room, eat-in kitchen with dining area, a butler’s pantry, an oversized master bath and dressing room, a glass-enclosed conservatory and pavilion as well as a separate staff suite.

Other illustrious residents of 55 Central Park West include Donna Karan, Marsha Mason, Noel Ashman, Ginger Rogers and of course, Buddy’s dad, Walter Hobbs.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)

The sequel to the hit Christmas classic Home Alone finds Kevin McAllister once again separated from his family at Christmas. However this time, Kevin is not left at his family’s suburban mansion, but instead, he boards the wrong flight and ends up in The Big Apple.

After some shenanigans with the staff of the Plaza Hotel, Kevin is once again in the position to fight against the Wet Bandits (now rebranded as The Sticky Bandits) who are planning to rob a gigantic toy story called Duncan’s Toy Chest of the money that is intended to be donated to a children’s hospital.

Duncan’s Toy Chest was actually filmed at The Rookery Building which is actually a condo property in Chicago, IL. These condos are estimated to be valued at a little over $550,000.

Bad Santa (2003)

Starring Billy Bob Thornton, Bad Santa is not your typical Yuletide film. It follows a pair of professional thieves who plan to rob a department store after posing as Santa and his elf, befriending a troubled child along the way.

The home where Thornton illegally crashes is located in West Hills. The 5 bedroom/4.5 bath estate boasts a list of incredible features including an infinity pool, spa, step-down fire bit, a barbeque center and bar, and stunning panoramic views.

The stucco-style estate is currently valued at an estimated $1,398,419.

The Family Stone (2005)

“The Family Stone” follows New York Executive, Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) as she and her sister visit her boyfriend’s eccentric family for the holidays. Through a series of mishaps, the family learns a few lessons on self-sacrifice, love and what it looks like to be in a successful relationship.

The family home featured in “The Family Stone” is actually an 1860 colonial in Riverside, CT. The 5 bedroom/5 bath home covers 3,964 sqft. and sits on roughly an acre and a half.

With a fireplace, partial basement and attic the estate last sold for $4,102,000 in 2008 and is valued at an estimated $3,278,299 today.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) was intentionally left off this list. Though it may be one of the most revered Christmas Classics of all time, the “drafty old house,” that George and Mary Bailey come to call home in Bedford Falls is not a real-world location.
